Walker Art Gallery is widely known as the National Gallery of the North, and with good reason. Its collection, spanning more than 700 years from the 13th century to the present day – is one of the most significant in the United Kingdom outside of London, and admission is completely free. Part of National Museums Liverpool, the gallery opened in 1877 in a handsome neoclassical building on William Brown Street, one of Liverpool's finest civic thoroughfares, and has been a cornerstone of the city's cultural life ever since.

The collection is extraordinary in its breadth and quality. Highlights include Italian and Netherlandish paintings from 1300 to 1550, masterpieces by Rubens, Poussin, Rembrandt, Turner and Stubbs, and an outstanding gathering of Pre-Raphaelite works by Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt. The Impressionist galleries include works by Monet and Degas, and the collection of British art from 1880 to 1950 - including works by Nash, Freud and Lowry - is exceptional. The John Moores Painting Prize, one of the most prestigious open painting competitions in the UK, has been held at the Walker since 1957.

Big Art for Little Artists

Big Art for Little Artists is a dedicated gallery for children under eight, offering a vibrant and hands-on introduction to the permanent collection through play, storytelling and creative activities. Regular workshops, family events and temporary exhibitions are programmed throughout the year.

Accessibility

The building is accessible via a ramp to the right of the main entrance, with a lift to the first floor and wheelchair-accessible toilets on the ground floor. Two pre-bookable accessible parking spaces are available in the rear car park.
