Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King is one of the most distinctive pieces of 20th-century architecture in Britain. Designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd and completed in 1967, its circular form and dramatic crown of glass lantern tower — known locally as Paddy's Wigwam — make it instantly recognisable on Liverpool's skyline. The lantern tower contains stunning abstract stained glass by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens in shades of blue, red, yellow and green, flooding the circular nave with coloured light and creating an atmosphere unlike any other place of worship in the country.

As England's largest Catholic cathedral, it welcomes people from all faiths, all walks of life and all corners of the world. A daily programme of services runs throughout the week, and the cathedral's choral tradition is celebrated through its Cathedral Choir and the Metropolitan Cathedral Singers. The building houses an outstanding collection of artwork including pieces by Ceri Richards and Elisabeth Frink, and the Welcome Centre provides information about the cathedral's history, architecture, collections and the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

Beneath the main building lies the extraordinary Lutyens' Crypt, open Monday to Saturday - a vast and atmospheric space begun to the design of Sir Edwin Lutyens in the 1930s as part of an ambitious earlier cathedral project that was never completed. The crypt is one of the great hidden architectural treasures of Britain, with its powerful brick vaulting and serene chapels offering a completely different experience to the modern building above. On-site parking is available at the cathedral car park off Mount Pleasant, with clearly marked accessible spaces. For coaches and minibuses, prior arrangement is required by emailing the cathedral.
