Widely regarded as one of the finest neoclassical buildings in the world, St George's Hall has stood proudly at the heart of Liverpool since 1854. Designed by architect Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, the Grade I listed building was created to house both the city's law courts and its grand public assembly rooms. Today it remains one of Liverpool's most celebrated landmarks and forms part of the city's UNESCO-recognised waterfront heritage setting.
The exterior is instantly recognisable thanks to its imposing Corinthian columns, grand portico and monumental scale. Inside, visitors will discover equally impressive interiors including the Great Hall, Concert Room and a series of historic courtrooms. Throughout the building, intricate stonework, decorative ceilings and vast chandeliers showcase the ambition and craftsmanship of Victorian Liverpool.
The Great Hall
The centrepiece of St George's Hall is the spectacular Great Hall. Measuring over 50 metres in length, it features one of the largest Minton tiled floors in the world. The floor is usually protected beneath a wooden covering but is revealed during special heritage events and guided tours, allowing visitors to appreciate its extraordinary decorative design.
The hall has hosted everything from civic ceremonies and royal visits to concerts, exhibitions and cultural celebrations. Above visitors hangs a magnificent barrel-vaulted ceiling adorned with elaborate plasterwork and classical detailing.
The Stable Gallery
Located within the lower level of the building, the Stable Gallery offers visitors a fascinating opportunity to explore areas that once supported the day-to-day running of St George's Hall. This historic space has been transformed into exhibition areas that help tell the story of the building and the people who used it.
The gallery regularly features displays, heritage exhibitions and interpretation panels covering the history of St George's Hall, Liverpool's civic development and the architectural significance of the building. It provides valuable insight into parts of the hall that many visitors might otherwise overlook.
Concerts, Events and Tours
St George's Hall continues to serve as one of Liverpool's premier cultural venues. Visitors can attend concerts, comedy shows, family events, exhibitions and seasonal celebrations throughout the year. Guided heritage tours offer access to areas including the courtrooms, prison cells and hidden architectural features while sharing stories from the building's remarkable past.
The hall is also home to the famous Willis Organ, one of the finest concert organs in the country. Regular recitals and performances allow visitors to experience the incredible acoustics of the Concert Room and Great Hall.
