Liverpool's Waterfront is one of the great urban rivieras of the world - a sweeping stretch of historic dockside that has been the gateway to one of the world's most significant port cities for over three centuries. At its heart is the Pier Head, dominated by the Three Graces - the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building - three of the most photographed and instantly recognisable landmarks in Britain. Look up at the Royal Liver Building and you'll spot the famous Liver Birds: one watching over the city, the other gazing out to sea, said to be waiting for the safe return of Liverpool's sailors.
From the Pier Head, visitors can board the iconic Mersey Ferry for the classic crossing to Birkenhead and Seacombe - one of the most atmospheric and affordable ways to take in the skyline. The life-size bronze statues of the Fab Four stand nearby, a perennial favourite with visitors and a testament to Liverpool's extraordinary musical heritage. The Royal Albert Dock - the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the UK - stretches along the waterfront to the south, home to the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the International Slavery Museum, Tate Liverpool and a wealth of independent restaurants, bars and shops. Adjacent to the dock is the M&S Bank Arena, one of the North's premier live music and events venues.
The Waterfront hosts a rich programme of events throughout the year, from the River of Light illuminations festival and the On the Waterfront summer concert series to open-air film screenings, food festivals and community events. Heading north from the Pier Head towards the mouth of the Mersey, the Liverpool Cruise Terminal welcomes ocean liners from around the world, and Bramley Moore Dock - the home of the new Everton FC stadium - sits just beyond. Whether you're visiting for an hour or a full day, Liverpool's Waterfront is rewarding at any time of year.
