Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Britain and the fifth largest in the world — a vast and breathtaking building that has been at the heart of Liverpool's life since its foundation stone was laid in 1904. Designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott, who was only 22 years old when he won the commission, the cathedral took 74 years to complete and was finally consecrated in 1978. It is built from local pink sandstone, with a tower that rises to 101 metres — making it the highest cathedral in the United Kingdom. The interior is extraordinary in its scale, with the central space stretching 189 metres in length and the tower crossing rising to 55 metres — among the largest interior spaces of any building in the world.
The cathedral is a living place of worship with a rich daily cycle of services, from morning prayer and the Eucharist to Choral Evensong — all open to visitors regardless of faith. Its world-renowned choir gives voice to some of the most inspiring choral music in the country. Beyond worship, the building is home to a series of major art installations that change throughout the year, bringing world-class contemporary and historic art into dialogue with the architecture. Free guided tours are available and the cathedral also offers a digital guide via Bloomberg Connects.
The Tower Experience offers visitors a chance to climb to the rooftop of the cathedral for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama across Liverpool, the Mersey and beyond — one of the most spectacular views in the North West. The Welsford Bistro serves an all-day menu including burgers, brunch and vegan options, with an outdoor terrace on the Welsford Porch overlooking Gambier Terrace. On-site parking is available via Upper Duke Street on a pay-on-exit basis, with designated accessible bays. For any accessibility requirements, contact the Constables Lodge before your visit.
