The Museum of Liverpool opened in 2011 as the newest and largest addition to the National Museums Liverpool group - and as the world's first national museum devoted to the history of a regional city. Designed by Danish architects 3XN and built at a cost of £72 million, the striking contemporary building sits on the Mann Island site at the Pier Head, directly alongside the world-famous Three Graces. With 8,000 square metres of exhibition space and over 6,000 objects on display, it is also the largest newly-built national museum in Britain for more than a century.

The permanent collection is arranged across four major themes. The Great Port explores Liverpool's history as one of the world's most significant maritime cities, including a recreation of the Liverpool Overhead Railway - the world's first overhead electric railway. Global City examines the city's profound international connections and its role in the slave trade, migration and emigration. People's Republic celebrates the social history and culture of Liverpool's people, from community and politics to sport. Wondrous Place explores the city's extraordinary contribution to music and popular culture, including its unparalleled Beatles heritage, and features Ben Johnson's epic Liverpool Cityscape painting and a life-size cast of the Liver Bird.

Temporary exhibitions, events and community programmes run throughout the year, and the museum's flexible gallery spaces regularly change to enable more of the National Museums Liverpool collections to be shown. An on-site café offers waterfront views across the Mersey. The museum is fully accessible throughout, and is a short walk from Pier Head Merseyrail station and the city centre.

Little Liverpool | Gallery for under 6s

Little Liverpool is a dedicated hands-on gallery within the Museum of Liverpool, designed especially for children under the age of six. A fantastical, immersive play world where little ones are in charge, it is one of the best free indoor play experiences for young families in the city - and a wonderful introduction to the wider museum for the very youngest visitors.

The gallery's highlights include Liverpuddles, an interactive water play area inspired by the River Mersey, where children can sail boats through a miniature city, fish for pretend marine creatures and rubbish, and run cars through tunnels beneath Liverpool's famous landmarks. The A to Z dock wall features an alphabet of objects chosen by children to represent each letter, each with its own hands-on interactive to encourage discovery, speaking and listening. The Liver Bird's Nest is a multisensory pod designed for babies and very young children - a cosy, safe space to kick off shoes, crawl around and relax with carers.

The gallery runs timed sessions throughout the day and operates on a ticketed basis, with free tickets available from the Welcome Desk on arrival. A number of special sessions also take place throughout the year, including Tiny Liverpool - a free weekly session on Fridays during term time for babies and children up to three years. There's singing, stories and play and ticketed themed special sessions which take place regularly, particularly during school holidays. Relaxed morning drop-in sessions are also offered on a free, pre-bookable basis. Check the Little Liverpool events page for current session times and booking before your visit.
